A fake iOS 7 advert that promises iPhones will become waterproof after being updated to Apple’s latest software has reportedly fooled owners into destroying their beloved smartphones.
The poster, which went viral on social media sites after iOS 7 was made available to the public last week, claims the update “prevents any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry” when it is exposed to water. Surprisingly, some believed it.
“In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry,” the advert read. It even had small print that promised “waterproofing covered by Apple’s warranty policy.”
After seeing the ad and updating to iOS 7, some iPhone owners couldn’t wait to test out the new feature, so they went ahead and threw their expensive devices into water. It wouldn’t have taken them too long to realize that the ad was fake after that point.
“Whoever said iOS was waterproof… **** you,” one iPhone owner wrote on Twitter.
Sky News reports that the ad was first posted to 4Chan as a prank, but quickly made its way around social networks for millions to see. Most would have instantly dismissed it as a fake, of course, but it seems a small few didn’t think to double-check the claims before testing the supposed waterproofing feature.
Despite what the ad claims, Apple’s standard warranties do not cover water damage, so unless you purchase AppleCare+ with your iPhone, you’ll need to pay for the repair or replacement yourself.
If nothing else, this ad should remind us that anything that appears too good to be true usually is.
