This is becoming something of a meme. It’s at least the third time in a row that this has happened: an update to Apple‘s iOS leads to users complaining of deteriorating battery life. Except this time we also seem to be getting reports of phones running hot as well. Try this complaint in the Apple forums:

1) I deleted ALL Exchange accounts on my phone. The overheating and battery consumption went AWAY within 5 minutes. I left the phone like that for about 3 hours.
2) I added back ONE of the Exchange accounts. Within 5 minutes, my phone was hot to the touch and the battery was draining at a rate of 5 percent every 10 minutes (or so).
3) I have, once again, removed the Exhange account. The phone is cool to the touch.
OBVIOUSLY, there is an issue with iPhone and the Exchange server settings.

One user does not a failed upgrade make of course. But there are extensive complaints on this thread and this one too.

We’ve even got a bit of news out of the UK:

Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.
While Apple’s investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4s should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that their problem has been fixed.
There’s a certain amusement to this for me. I’ve been around long enough that I recall even the IBM salesmen saying that you should never buy software version x.0, just never. Always wait for x.1 to come out. In that release they’ll have fixed the bugs they didn’t have time to get to given the shipping schedule for x.0. Perhaps we should update this for iOS. Never install Apple software that is x.1. Wait until they’ve got x.11 ready….
