Vehicle-to-vehicle testing using Wi-Fi signals could affect future safety standards.

"Audi Connect" prices fall from $600 to just $450 over 2.5 years.

On Thursday, Audi and T-Mobile announced a new data plan that will allow drivers to pay $15 per month to have mobile Internet in their cars. That presumes, of course, that customers will sign up for a 30-month contract, bringing the grand total to $450 over two and a half years (Audi says the $15 per month offer could be even less overall "if the Audi owner enjoyed the six-month free trial period included at purchase"). This new plan has been dropped from $600 over a similar 30-month period. The price of a month-to-month option will stay the same at $30 per month.

The "Audi Connect" service is available on the 2012 A7, 2012 A8, 2012 A6 sedan, and similar vehicles for the 2013 model years. The service also includes a route view via Google Earth and Sirius satellite radio traffic data.

“Audi and T-Mobile worked closely to develop the new pricing plan based on extensive research and feedback from both dealers and customers,” said Anupam Malhotra, senior manager of Connected Vehicle for Audi in a statement.

Of course, we’re not really convinced that drivers should have yet another cheap way to be distracted while on the road. It’s likely that many passengers already have data plans on their phones, so why would they need a car to bring them Internet access?
