At the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, at the same format with Samsung, Huawei announced its foldable smartphone, the Huawei Mate X.
The Mate X has OLED display transforms from 6.6-inch to 8-inch, making it larger than Samsung Galaxy Fold, which transforms from 4.6-inch to 7.3-inch, for the comparison iPad mini display is 7.9-inch. In the transformation process, Huawei uses a company’s innovative stretchable hinge, called a “Falcon Wing,” it is made up of more than one hundred components.
Unlike the Galaxy Fold which opens like a book, Mate X opens outside and has three functionalities, when it is folded to the phone mode the camera houses in thick wing part on the side allowing the display to be a notch-free, there is also a push-button latch securing the device when it folded. The thick side of the wing also uses to grab the device when it is on the tablet mode.
The thickness of the Mate X when it is opened is just 4.5mm, but when it is folded measures 11mm, Huawei used Leica multi-lens camera, the Mate X design allows to use the main camera for both as a selfie through a rear 6.4-inch screen or as a rear-facing camera when using a larger front 6.6-inch screen or when it is in a tablet mode.
The Leica Mate X camera system, includes a 40-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 16-megapixel ultra wide angle lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens, there is also a fourth camera Huawei promised to be activated later.
Galaxy Fold has a multitasking feature which is capable to split the screen and runs up to three apps at the same time, Huawei on its side plans to focus on that feature. Samsung has developed a Continuity feature allowing the apps to be opened either the device is folded or opened, the Chinese company could be planning to have something similar.
The Mate X is powered by a 7nm Kirin 980 processor chip, and like Galaxy Fold it will feature a 5G connectivity modem, the device equipped with a massive 4500mAh battery supporting a new Huawei’s charging technology called SuperCharge that can charge the Mate X to 85 percent in just 30 minutes.
For the biometric authentication purposes, the Mate X has the fingerprint sensors integrated into the power button.

The price of the Galaxy Fold is at $1.980 and many users get surprised when it was announced, but as it turns out the Mate X is more expensive, it will cost €2,299, that is roughly $2,600.
Galaxy Fold will be launched in April, while the Mate X won't go to sell until June or July. Given the complicated issues between the U.S government and the Huawei company, it's unlikely to be available in the United States.
Likely many other smartphone manufacturer companies will follow Samsung and Huawei to come with their foldable phone, and Apple has registered more than one patent related to the display flexibility either for a smartphone or the Apple Watch, and there have been rumors suggested that Apple is exploring folding display technology back to 2016, but at this point of time no evidence that Apple is actually working on a foldable smartphone to release in the near future.
If we look at the foldable smartphone concept there are many people got excited about the idea, while many of them look at it as a fad that will disappear with the passing of time, or the contrary a foldable phone will dictate the smartphone industry, let's know your opinion in the comment below.
