  • 1- Press down the Volume Up button and the Power / Lock button until the "Slide to Power Off" option pops up at the top of your iPhone screen.

2- To turn off your iPhone swipe the slider right to "Slide to Power Off."

The iPhone will start powering down and turning off completely, the device will stay shut off until you turn it back on again.

There is another way to turn off your iPhone or iPad via Settings app, which is not required to hold down any physical button, but still, you should swipe the slide to power off gesture:

  • 1- From the Home screen tap "Settings" then head to "General"

  • 2- In the general section scroll down and tap "Shut Down."

How to turn back on your iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR


If you want to turn your iPhone back on again you can use either of the following methods:

  • On the side of your iPhone Hold down the Power / Lock button.

  • Plug your iPhone into a power source.

Two above methods of turning a shutdown iPhone back ON is applying on all iPhones including the older versions like iPhone 8, 8 Plus, iPhone 7, 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, iPhone 6, 6 Plus, iPhone SE, and prior models too.

While in some cases, affected hardware of your iPhone could prevent it from turning back on again, so if any piece is damaged it might need repair first.

Turning off your iPhone and turning it back on again can be used to implement a soft reboot of your device instead of using usual hard reboots, which are immediate, less graceful and done by another method. The soft reboot helps sometimes to resolve some software issues.
